| | | | Dates: | 1798-1811 | | | | Abstract: | The APS has approximately nineteen letters written between Christian Denke and Gothilff Muhlenberg, one of the sons of Henry Muhlenberg. Gothilff followed his father's calling and was a prominent religious and cultural leader. Muhlenberg served as a pastor of Lutheran Church in Lancaster and became a prominent educator, serving as President of Franklin College – now Franklin and Marshall. The APS has a large amount of Muhlenberg's papers, including a large and detailed collection of his journals from the early republic; all of which are in German or occasionally Latin. Muhlenberg had a keen interest in natural history, especially botany, and much of his work is detailed in these journals, as are regular daily activities. The Denke correspondence is part of this larger collection of Muhlenberg papers.

| | | | Dates: | Circa 1775-1800 | | | | Abstract: | This collection contains a number of musical compositions by Madame Anne Louise Boyvin d'Hardancourt Brillon de Juoy, a prominent Parisian salon hostess and musician. Her most famous composition, Le Marche des Insurgents, which was inspired by the American victory at Saratoga, is included in this collection. Many of these compositions are handwritten and appear to be from the eighteenth century, although it is unclear when they were written and who wrote them.

| | | | Dates: | 1802-1911 | | | | Abstract: | The F.A. Michaux Collection is a large collection of correspondence. Francois Michaux was the son of Andre Michaux. He was, like his father, a botanist. Francois also was an active member of the APS. Michaux regularly corresponded with peers in Europe, and this collection captures the conveyance of news, information, and knowledge across the Atlantic. As an active member of the APS and other institutions, Michaux's correspondence also lends insight into the establishment and operation of many scientific institutions. The vast majority of the collection consists of outgoing correspondence from Michaux; his primary correspondent was John Vaughan of the APS. The correspondence is almost exclusively in French. Later documents reflect the APS's continued interest in silviculture, which was spurred by a bequest by Michaux. Included in this section is the APS's acquisition of books and involvement in forest preservation and development, including the planting and preservation of Michaux Grove in Fairmount Park.
